If you have a love of good American-style food served in generous proportions, drop by the Canyon Grille restaurant located in the Canyon Casino at 131 Main St. in Black Hawk. The casino offers both free self and valet parking and is easily accessible at the end of Main Street’s historic building. Take the elevator or stairs up to the restaurant on the third floor.

The Canyon Grille is open daily, serving breakfast, lunch and dinner, features a soup and salad bar, and daily specials. During the month of September the restaurant offers an unbeatable meal for the special discounted price of $2.99: Monday is a chicken salad wrap sandwich; Wednesday is a patty melt; and Friday is a steak or tuna melt.

In case you’re visiting Black Hawk on a Sunday, the Canyon Grille special is a sumptuous beef rib plate. On Tuesday or Thursday the Canyon Grille Connoisseur’s Club still offers great food at a 50 percent discount.

Simply present your player’s club card to receive all the Grille’s special promotions and discounts. If you don’t have a card, just stop by the guest services desk on the main floor and request one. Coupons are also available at the desk for the 50 percent dining discount.

On Thursday two of us stopped by the Canyon Grille in anticipation of a fun dining experience at a great price. The daily special was pot roast for $6.99 and the soup was an Italian wedding minestrone for $1.25 a bowl. The soup and salad bar was available with an entrée for $2.

First we started with a delicious nachos supreme appetizer for $6.99 with snappy jalapenos, which we couldn’t finish—the serving was so generous. Our waitress made sure we had prompt service and instead of refilling our beverage glasses, brought carafes of root beer and freshly-brewed iced tea to our table. That was a nice touch and greatly appreciated.

The service was so good our entrées were on our table before we could even begin to think about finishing our appetizer. My dinner companion order the pot roast special and it came with mashed potatoes and gravy, and fresh broccoli that he thoroughly enjoyed.

My choice for dinner was an open-faced New York strip steak sandwich served on a toasted French baguette for $6.99. It was topped with onion rings and came with homemade, lightly spiced potato chips and a lettuce-and-pickle garnish on the side.

Mudslide pie

I consider the chips the best in town—they’re freshly made “chips with a kick,” complemented my sandwich perfectly, and on their own, they’re worth a trip to the Grille to experience.

If you have a sweet tooth, the Grille will satisfy it. To complete our dining that evening we had a choice of seven enticing desserts: banana crème pie, cheesecake, chocolate mousse cake, coconut crème pie, Italian lemon crème cake, mudslide pie and a sugar-free chocolate crème pie.

My dinner companion ordered the mudslide pie for $3.50, which for chocolate lovers is a yummy indulgence. The bottom layer is similar to a brownie with a middle layer of chocolate mousse topped with white chocolate. My chocolate mousse cake for $4.75 featured a moist chocolate cake layered with chocolate mousse and garnished with chocolate shavings. Both were embellished with whipped cream and raspberry sauce were delightful death-by-chocolate desserts.

It doesn’t matter what day you’re at the Canyon Casino’s restaurant, you’ll find super dining specials combined with a very cheery and welcoming staff. The entire restaurant’s staff easily makes you feel like you’re at home, comfortable and relaxed, and that adds an excellent touch to the pleasure of dining out at the Canyon Grille.
