That old truism maintains: “First impressions are the most important.” Old sayings are true; that’s why they’ve lasted. The first impression most casinos have a chance to establish is through their valet corps. If the valet you meet is super-courteous and volunteers to go out of his or her way to accompany you to your destination within the casino, you’re probably at Fitzgerald’s and your valet is a handsome Filipino named Edwin Damaso.
Edwin hails from Pensacola, Fla., where he was raised with a brother and three sisters. The Rocky Mountains and mountain biking brought him to Colorado, or maybe it was the surveying course Westwood College offers; whichever it was, he headed west and earned an Associate’s Degree from Westwood College in surveying and made Golden his home.
Surveying jobs nearly disappeared in the recession and Edwin went to a job fair where he was hired by Fitzgerald’s Casino. He loved the job immediately but wanted to use his hard-won degree and left the casino business when surveying work picked up. Surveying jobs again took a nosedive and Edwin called Chris Nelson at Fitzgerald’s to ask if he could return. The answer was an unqualified “yes” and he returned last October. His satisfaction with the job is evident.
Nelson, security and valet manager for Fitzgerald’s Casino, says everyone loves Edwin.
“His laugh is infectious and he’s full of energy and makes everyone happy. It was a no-brainer to take him back,” Nelson said.
I personally observed Edwin’s strong work ethic and helpfulness and was captivated by his infectious smile. His boss, Nelson, seconded that perspective by responding, “Guests like him. He’s approachable and happy all the time.”
Edwin enjoys mountain biking and exploring the Jefferson County bike trails. He appreciates the glories of Colorado’s mountain beauty, the outdoor focus and the weather – Florida won’t be getting him back. Edwin is a credit to the casino business and provides Fitzgerald’s guests a great first impression.
