Chills, thrills and spooky treats

Swarm Canyon Casino this October

By Rosemary Fetter

For a super spooky Halloween treat, the Canyon Casino in Black Hawk has it all. Known around town for its spectacular haunting displays this time of year, the casino has added several new hair-raisers, including the “The Dead Zone” with a zombie, buzzsaw and smokey in the electric chair. Every Saturday night between 7-11 p.m., nine lucky guests who are playing their club cards in “The Dead Zone” can win a share of $2,500. One winner is guaranteed $1,000 instantly.  If your name is called, just skulk on up to the table and pick out your prize, which will be hidden under a bloody hand, a hairy rat (pretend, of course), a skull or some other creepy crawly creature.

Check out the giant spiders and creepy graveyard in the Grand Plateau or play The Pumpkin Graveyard, where you might unearth some tempting treasures.  On Mondays and Wednesdays, players can win cash for simply using their Canyon Club cards. Every half hour between noon – 4 p.m., one lucky guest will be selected to win $50 instantly and everyone actively playing on the same bank of machines wins $25. In addition, The Canyon will be offering point multiplier Fridays and 3X, 4X VIP, and 5X Platinum points on Sunday, Oct. 28.

With its friendly and casual atmosphere – with a little spookiness during October – and great staff, the Canyon is the place to be. One of the oldest casinos in the city, the casino features 410 slot machines – 106 are the old-fashioned kind, so you can hear the sound of real quarters falling into the tray as you collect your winnings. The Canyon offers both new and classic games, with five table games including craps and blackjack, available seven days a week in the new blackjack pit.

The Canyon Grille on the third floor, which opens daily at 8:30 a.m., offers a full breakfast, including made to order omelets and breakfast burritos. The Grille specializes in certified Black Angus ground steak burgers served any way you like it, with your choice of fries or homemade chips. Fresh salads and other daily food specials are offered throughout the week.

Several tasty new entrees have been added to the menu recently, including chicken parmesan, with tangy sauce topped with mozzarella and served with pasta and salad, Tuscan pork chops with homemade applesauce and a yummy Mediterranean surf and turf, a petite filet topped with shrimp and cucumber salsa, plus mashed potatoes and salad.

If you don’t have a Player’s Card, drop by Guest Services and pick one up. The casino has one of the best player rewards programs in Black Hawk. Membership is always free and has lots of benefits. You’ll receive Canyon Grille discounts ($2 per day), valuable mailings, eligibility for promotions, parties and same day cash back.

The Canyon has its own parking, and valet parking is available.
