Not too big – not too small
By Linda Jones
The Canyon is the perfect size for a casino in Black Hawk; it’s not a huge casino where you wander around feeling lost and alone, but it’s not a small casino either that has no amenities. It’s just big enough to have all the games legally allowed at a Colorado casino and is a good place to enjoy a sit-down restaurant. The comfortable atmosphere is reminiscent of Cheers, a casino where “everybody knows your name.” The Canyon offers all the amenities you need: both valet and self-parking, 400-plus slots including both TITO and coin machines, plus craps, roulette and blackjack. Ticket in/ticket out slots reign at the Canyon, but the smaller Plateau area offers coin-only slots for players who prefer the action and noise of the older machines.
One of the blackjack tables will become a carnival game of blackjack switch this month, and the floor format is also changing. That won’t alter the fierce loyalty Canyons’ patrons have, whether they’re slot players or table players.
The management is unusually loyal as well and the new general manager, Brian Cloud, first broke into management as director of slot operations at the Canyon. Cloud left the Canyon about five years ago but he’s now returned as the general manager. Dara Dickesheid, marketing manager, began working here in 1999. She also moved on after five years and worked in the metro area, but she only lasted a year before returning to the Canyon. Being employed at a casino usually spoils it for them to work in any other industry since the casino is such a happy place to work.
Inside the Canyon Casino, the Canyon Café offers tasty food at reasonable prices and the weekday specials have been longtime favorites for local firefighters and policemen, county employees and gamblers. Monday’s special is turkey wraps with French fries, Wednesday offers beef brisket sandwiches with fries, and Friday specials offer a choice of grilled fish or chicken breast, each with French fries and vegetables.
The Canyon’s prominent location on Main Street in Black Hawk opened as a Harrah’s Casino in December 1993. Harrah’s pulled out of Black Hawk in spring 1997, and the Canyon Casino acquired the site.
