The Cripple Creek District Museum‘s first ever Doors to the Past Art Exhibit and Silent Auction made a September night to remember. Eleven artists – Carlene Toy, Corey Collins, Deb Peorio, Dixie Clare, JoAnn Kincaid, Jon Zimmer, Kelly Morgan, Noel Wallace, Rod Sutton, Tricia Smith and William Lancaster – applied their skills and time into converting antique doors from the Museum archives into pieces of art. “We just couldn’t believe all of the different and unique ideas they had,” said Museum Director Jan Collins. “It was so much fun watching their imaginations make our old doors come to life.” The doors came from the Museum archives, but also included a set recently donated by local businesswoman Sally Schibler.
Artist Corey Collins' "Fossil Fish (Doorfal Fin Antiquious)" is still for sale at the Cripple Creek District Museum.
At the Artist’s Reception and Silent Auction on Sept. 26, five of the doors sold. The artists generously shared half of the winning bid with the museum in one of the most successful fundraisers to date. The remaining six doors will remain at the museum over the next year, and purchasers are welcome to buy them at a price set by each artist.
In addition, the Museum has deemed this newest fall event successful enough to merit doing it again next year.
“We already have people coming forward offering to donate more doors,” said Collins, “so we will definitely sponsor this event again next year.”
