Recently, I played in a house game that had 40 entrants in a normal No Limit Hold’em tournament that paid five spots. The first hand I won a small pot . The next hand I was dealt two aces on the button. There were 2 callers when it got to me so I made a pot sized raise. I was happy when one player folded and the other player called. When the flop came three babies in different suits, my opponent made a bet that put 2/3 of his total stack in the middle and clearly made him pot committed. I hesitated for a minute and then said all-in.
The room was noisy and my opponent said, “All in?” I thought he was calling and turned over my two aces. He did not show his hole cards and said he was thinking about calling. The players on both sides of him said he was asking if I was all-in and not calling. The tournament director then gave him the option of calling or folding. After turning up his two pocket queens and thinking about it for awhile, he finally folded his ladies, but ask if the dealer would turn over the remaining board. The dealer responded by showing the last two board cards-another baby and a queen.
Fortunately, for me, my pocket rockets beat his Trips since he failed to call. I had a nice stack at that point and with a little more luck went on to finish in the money.
