The Real Deal — My top 10 big-value No Limit poker strategy tips

by editorial on November 2, 2010

1. Don’t call raises with KQ.

2. Late in a hand, lay down big hands (sometimes winning hands), if you strongly believe you are beaten. Earlier in a hand, you can have a bigger hand, be less sure you are beaten, but still fold.

3. Given the same situation, bad players very rarely fold big hands.

4. There is a substantial gap between hands that are legitimate raising hands and those that are hands that can legitimately call a raise.

5. Stack size is extremely critical in No Limit Hold’em. Whenever possible large stacks play more aggressively than normal against small stacks. Small stacks play more conservative than normal, but aggressively when they do play. They avoid confrontations with big stacks whenever possible.

6. Do not call raises with ace-small suited or small pairs, especially when out of position.

7. Avoid large multi-handed pots.

8. Losers leave a lot of money on the table by checking on the river with a strong hand against one or two opponents when a scare card appears. This is costliest when there exist a high number of losing hands your opponents might reasonably hold and call your river bet.

9. A good player minimizes the times that he/she is exposed to going all-in and potentially broke. This often requires folding some big hands in the early going.

10. You must play strong and steal some pots when you think your opponent is weak, even if you’re own hand is extremely weak.
