The Real Deal — Pick a hand, make a good bet

by editorial on January 25, 2011

You are offered the following proposition: Pick one of three hands (Jack/Ten suited, Ace/King unsuited, or a pair of fours) and your opponent will take one of the two remaining hands.  Then deal out a five-card Hold’em board. Reshuffle and repeat a hundred times. The winner is the player with the most winning hands. Is this a good bet for you? Which hand should you pick?

PICK A HAND SOLUTION: No, this is not a good bet. No matter which hand you chose, one of the two remaining hands will be favored over it in a heads up situation. A pair of fours is favored over Ace/King unsuited, Ace/King unsuited is favored over Jack/Ten suited, and Jack/Ten suited is favored over a pair of fours.
